Outreach and public engagement
Great Exhibition Road Festival 2026
This two day festival is a free annual celebration of science and the arts each summer in South Kensington.
On 6-7 June 2026, John Hudson organised a stall on magnetic sensing and Ping-Luen Ho was one of the volunteers explaining science to pupils, answering questions, and building activities.
Pint of Science
Pint of Science is an annual festival that brings researchers into local spaces to share their latest discoveries in a fun, engaging, and accessible way.
At the Leeds event on 19 May 2026, Servet Ozdemir presented a talk titled "Handedness in stealth magnets: the secret to computers that do not heat up".
World Pigment Day
World Pigment Day, held annually on March 22, celebrates the diversity and importance of natural and synthetic pigments. As part of this year’s event, Professor Sandrine Heutz was invited to speak to an audience of around 50 members of the public, including artists (painters and poets) and scientists.
The event highlighted the role of molecular materials in bridging the art world - where they are known as iconic pigments - and the technology sector, where they underpin advances in semiconductors and quantum materials, fostering an engaging interdisciplinary exchange.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Shelly Conroy was invited to speak at this event marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February 2026. She delivered a scientific talk during the morning programme and later joined a panel discussion alongside leading scientists to explore ways to better support the next generation of women in STEM.
The event highlighted the vital role women play in science and the ongoing need for gender equality in STEM disciplines, bringing together researchers and students to reflect on practical steps toward a more inclusive scientific community.
Royce Institute Catalyst Program 1.0
Royce Catalyst is a new 12-week extracurricular entrepreneurship education programme, running from January to April 2026, with the aim of expanding the UK’s capacity for advanced materials commercialisation capability. At its heart, the programme connects early-stage materials projects with researcher teams who test their commercial potential. Ping-Luen Baron Ho was selected in cohort 1.0 and participated in this training with other 40 researchers from 20 UK universities.
SOPHia project
Participation in the SOPHiA outreach programme (Schools Outreach Programme in Physics and Astronomy) has involved visits to local primary schools, aiming to inspire interest in physics among younger students.
Mark McCann has carried out several school visits over 2025 to 2026 as part of this initiative, leading activities such as interactive demonstrations with plasma balls, laser light boards, and a Chladni plate.
Outreach session - Symmetry: The Language of Physical Laws for the Campus Experience Day
On 9 July 2025 Joe Barker ran a 90 minute outreach session with year 12 school students visiting Leeds. The session was called “Symmetry: The Language of Physical Laws for the Campus Experience Day” and Joe ran an activity for them to discover the basic principles of group theory through the symmetry properties of a triangle.
Symmetry properties are an important aspect of CAMIE where the interfaces we are building often break symmetries, enabling effects which are otherwise forbidden.
Science Lecture for Science Week

As part of the annual Science Week, Hari Babu Vasili visited Kerr Mackie Primary School in Leeds on 16 June 2025.
Hari gave a science lecture on "Magnetism and Thin films growth". This was followed by ion implantation setup (from UoL) demonstration, and some electromagnetism experiments that are enthusiastically received by children as well as the public.
BeCurious 2025
Ben Brereton and Zac Parkin took part in BeCurious on 17 May 2025 at the University of Leeds. This is a hands-on activity day to allow families to learn about University research.
Café Scientifique
Headingley Café Scientifique holds regular monthly meetings to hear eminent speakers give informative talks about all things scientific.
On 20 May 2024, Oscar Cespedes gave a talk on "How cute cats and Stranger Things may bring down civilisation - a quantum mechanical saga".
Research visits
Research visit in Japan
Mae Jankowski undertook a research visit to Nagoya University from 16 September to 16 December 2025 as part of the multi-skyrmion Project, contributing to an international collaboration on the coupling between magnetic and polar skyrmions in multiferroic materials.
During the visit, her work focussed on optimising the pulsed laser deposition of BiFeO₃ (BFO) and BiFeO₃–PbTiO₃ (BFPT) thin films across multiple compositions, alongside extensive structural and surface characterisation using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectivity, reciprocal space mapping, and atomic force microscopy.
The experience provided valuable hands-on exposure to advanced methods not previously available to her, strengthening her experimental expertise and deepening her understanding of multiferroic spin textures. Overall, the visit enhanced technical skills, supported collaborative research goals, and facilitated knowledge exchange between international research groups.
Research visit in Japan
Sehwan Song took part in a research visit from 2-6 June 2025, at the Department of Physics, Nagoya University, Japan.
The visit supported collaborative research on the coupling between magnetic skyrmions in ferromagnetic layers and polar skyrmions in ferroelectric BiFeO₃. The project aimed to explore electric-field control of topological spin textures through magnetoelectric interactions. This visit enhanced experimental techniques, deepened understanding of multiferroic spin textures, and strengthened international collaboration aligned with the goals of the Multi-skyrmion project.
Grenoble Graduate School of Engineering Research Visit
Three students from the Graduate School of Engineering in Physics, Electronics, and Materials Science in Grenoble, France - Emma Lévita, Rayan Saib, and Rayan Kerboua - took part in a 16-week research visit at the University of Leeds from May 2025.
This visit formed part of the internship requirement for their Engineering School programme and was hosted by Christopher Marrows and Oscar Cespedes.
